About Asphalt Calculation
This calculator helps you estimate the amount of asphalt needed for your paving project. Asphalt is typically measured by weight (tons or tonnes) rather than volume because its density can vary.
Tips for Accurate Calculation:
- Measure the area carefully, accounting for any curves or irregular shapes by breaking them down into smaller rectangular sections.
- Standard asphalt thickness for driveways is 2-3 inches, while parking lots may require 3-4 inches.
- The default density of 145 lbs/cu ft (2322 kg/m³) is typical for hot mix asphalt, but check with your supplier for exact values.
- Always order 5-10% extra to account for compaction and irregularities in the subbase.
How the Calculation Works
The calculator uses the following formulas:
Volume Calculation: Length × Width × Thickness
Weight Calculation: Volume × Density
For imperial units, the weight is converted from pounds to tons (1 ton = 2000 lbs). For metric, kilograms are converted to tonnes (1 tonne = 1000 kg).
